The 33rd Akademi Kognisyon, which we had to postpone, will now take place on Wednesday, April 23, at 8:00 PM! We are delighted to host Zeynep Kabadere, who completed her undergraduate and master’s studies at Middle East Technical University (METU) and will soon begin her doctoral studies at Eindhoven University!
In her talk titled “Evaluating Commonsense Reasoning in Artificial Intelligence”, we will discuss the limits of reasoning abilities in large language models and question whether they truly possess the capacity to reason.
Summary of the Talk:
This talk evaluates the commonsense reasoning capacity of large language models (LLMs) from both philosophical and experimental perspectives. It first discusses the fundamental components of commonsense reasoning and how these can be represented within AI systems. Then, it analyzes the performance of ChatGPT 4.0 and Claude Sonnet 3.5 by testing them across six different benchmarks. The findings reveal key limitations in these models’ information integration, contextual flexibility, and reasoning processes. While questioning whether AI truly engages in commonsense reasoning, the study also sheds light on classical problems in artificial intelligence, such as the representation problem and the frame problem.
Zeynep Kabadere is a researcher who completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in philosophy at Middle East Technical University (METU). Her work focuses on the philosophy of mind, philosophy of artificial intelligence, large language models (LLMs), and reasoning processes.
She conducts research on understanding the information-processing capacities of artificial intelligence systems, with a particular interest in issues such as the representation problem and commonsense reasoning. She is currently continuing her academic journey as a doctoral researcher at Eindhoven University.

Academy Cognition is a series of talks that aims to create a space for idea and knowledge exchange, fostering collective discussion and intellectual engagement, particularly among undergraduate and graduate students, individuals who often have less of a voice in academic settings. You can also contribute to Academy Cognition by submitting a text or presentation related to your work. For more details, feel free to contact us!
